How To Upcycle A Knitted Cardigan Into A Knitted Cushion Cover! (No Knit)

How to make a knitted cushion cover using an old button down cardigan.

This quick and easy project takes less than 15 minutes to complete and is a great way of upcycling a loved jumper that you no longer wear. If you don't have a jumper you are willing to cut up, you can pick up second hand ones cheaply in charity shops - especially in the men's sections!

The main advantage to using a button up cardigan instead of an old jumper is that you already have a finished opening to get the cushion in and out so it can be washed easily. This old jumper is made of a soft acrylic so it wont felt or shrink and washes well. It had some holes in the sleeves so it has been sat around unworn and unloved for too long.

Follow these steps to create your own!

Step One

Find an old button down cardigan you are happy to cut up.This one had a large hole in the sleeve. Make sure there are no holes in the main body where you will be using the fabric. If there are hole in the section you want to use, make sure you patch this first.

Step Two

Lay out the cardigan and make sure the bottom edges line up and the buttons are done up. Place the cushion on top, measure and mark out.

Step Three

Cut out the two squares leaving a generous seam allowance. Turn the two pieces right sides together and pin in place.

Step Four

Sew all around the edges leaving your seam allowances. If your jumper has cables (like this one) you will need to carefully make sure that you include all layers of knit in order to avoid any holes.

Step Five

Unbutton the cover, turn right sides out and put in the cushion. Button up.
